Top 10 Songs Against Drug Abuse/Addiction

Many people are influenced by music they listen to. Consciously or unconsciously, we become what we listen to. There are so many songs out there glamorizing drug use. Musicians use drugs to “enhance creativity” while listeners have used drugs to heighten the pleasure created by such music. Hip-hop and trap music have been blamed for heavily influencing drug use. On the flip side, there are several songs of different genres that are against drug use.
I have compiled a list of my favorite songs about addiction that could motivate you and help you out through even the darkest of days.

#1 FRIENDS By J.cole
J.cole wrote this song solely to address addiction. He summons addicts to stop blaming the cause of their Addiction on childhood traumas, trap music and other unfavorable conditions. He suggests meditation as a better way to face their problems as opposed to escaping reality under the influence of hard and harmful substances.

#2 Starting Over By Macklemore And Ryan Lewis
When writing “Starting Over,” Macklemore decided to be completely open about his recovery. In this powerful hip hop song, he shares his relapse after three years of recovery. He writes, “If I can be an example of getting sober, I can be an example of starting over.” Macklemore’s lyrics are powerful and heartfelt, and will make you realize how lucky you are to be sober.

#3 Dying in a hot tub by Palaye Royale

” I can see behind your eyes, your mind is getting wasted and you’re always getting wasted all the time. Getting concerned about your lonely days”.

#4 Get free by Lana Del Rey
“Sometimes it feels like I’ve got a war in my mind, I want to get off but I keep riding the ride”.
This song is a tribute to two female musicians who had drug overdose related deaths. Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston.

#5 Whiskey By Ice Prince ft. Sunny Nneji
Ice Prince narrates a sad story of wasted young lives on this song. The message goes beyond drugs and alcohol as the title suggests.

#6 Dope by Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga was inspired to write this song after losing her best friend to drugs as well as narratimg her own struggle with addiction. On this song she says “I feel so low from living high”

#7 Through my own eyes by Aaron Carter
This musician is better known for drug related charges than his music. He has suffered being underweight, malnourishment and even bankruptcy. In this song, the lyrics are all about his struggle to find freedom.

#8 Addicted by Kelly Clarkson
Kelly Clarkson’s normally upbeat, pop chart toppers take a dark turn with her song “Addicted.” The powerful ballad describes the struggle between addiction and quitting for good. In her lyrics, she writes “I’ll handle it, quit it. Just one more time, then that’s it.” It is a great reminder of the inner demons you deal with when you quit a substance, and how proud you should be of your accomplishments to get to where you are now.

#9 The ‘A’ team by Ed Sheeran
After Ed Sheeran visited a homeless shelter and listened to others’ life stories, he wrote this 2011 song about a heroin-addicted prostitute. The woman has been on the streets since she was 18. Both her body and her soul have been hollowed out by the horrors of drug addiction and life on the mean streets.

#10 Sober By Demi Lovato
In all honesty, there is no such thing as an ex-addict, you’ll spend the rest of your life recovering and struggling not to relapse back to old ways. Former Barney and Disney Child star, Demi Lovato has been open about her struggle with substance abuse. Although she relapsed after this song was released in 2018, there’s no harm in celebrating the moments of victory!

Remember, there is no amount of drugs that can make life meaningful!
